The Boise State Bronco football team has taken the nation by
storm and brings energy and excitement year-round for area sports
fans. The Broncos are typically ranked in the top ten of the
NCAA Division college football polls and often sell out Bronco
Stadium, which boasts a long winning streak and unique blue playing
field.
A complete program of collegiate sports is offered
at Boise State University, featuring a championship football team
and a nationally recognized basketball team. Championship
drag racing is held at Firebird Raceway. Fans of rodeo
enjoy the famous Snake River Stampede in Nampa and the Caldwell
Night Rodeo in Caldwell. Meridian Speedway offers drag racing
and stock car racing. In women's sports action, there is the
annual St. Luke's Women's Fitness Celebration, a run/walk event
that ranks among the largest of its kind in the nation. The
Albertson's Open golf tournament is part of the development PGA
Tour.
The NBA Development League has a presence in Boise with the
Idaho Stampede basketball club. The Stampede are past NBA
D-League champions and have twice hosted the NBA Development League
Showcase event Downtown at Qwest Arena.
Hockey is a fixture in Boise with the popular Idaho Steelheads
who compete in the ECHL. They are past national champions and
attract fans downtown all season long.
The Boise Hawks, members of the
Northwest League and affiliated with the Chicago Cubs, play
baseball from mid-June through early September at Memorial Stadium.
The Hawks won their eighth Northwest League Championship in
2006.
